Washington license plate laws you should know

Below are the four laws that most often trip up Washington drivers. Rules are enforced at the stop, the inspection station, and at registration renewal.

Two plates required

RCW 46.16A.200 requires every registered passenger vehicle in Washington to display a license plate on both the front and rear. Motorcycles, trailers, and certain farm vehicles display only a rear plate.

Front plate rule

No exemption exists for vehicles lacking a front mounting bracket. Failure to display a front plate is a traffic infraction under RCW 46.16A.200 and can result in a fine.

Registration stickers & display

Washington issues a tab sticker applied to the rear license plate indicating the expiration month and year. License plates must be renewed or replaced every 7 years under RCW 46.16A.200(5).

Inspection / smog check

Washington requires biennial OBD-II emissions testing in certain counties — including King, Pierce, Snohomish, and Clark. Gasoline vehicles up to 25 model years old are subject to the test. Washington has no statewide safety inspection requirement for passenger vehicles.

Types of Washington license plates

Washington issues dozens of plate designs. These are the main categories you'll encounter on the road or see at the DMV counter.

Washington standard passenger

Default plate with the state name and current design issued in the ABC-1234 format.

Personalized / Vanity

Up to 7 characters on any available background for $45/year through the DOL.

Disabled Person / Disabled Veteran

ISA wheelchair symbol; qualifies for accessible parking statewide. DV plates carry a reduced registration fee.

Military specialty

Gold Star Family, Purple Heart, POW/MIA, National Guard, and branch-specific designs.

Special interest

Over 60 specialty designs — UW Huskies, WSU Cougars, salmon recovery, organ donor, and wildlife conservation plates.

Classic / Horseless Carriage

For vehicles 40+ years old; restricted to occasional use such as exhibitions, parades, and club events.
